5-Step Guide to Preparing Potting Soil for Winter: Fix Poor Roots and Fungus (Beginner Edition 2026)

Preparing soil for winter means turning the compacted, waterlogged potting mix left over from the rainy season back into something loose, fast-draining and clean before cold weather arrives. It takes 5 steps: check the soil, remove old material and bad roots, mix a new airy blend, cut back watering, and hold off on heavy fertilizer. Roots grow well and fungus has nowhere to settle.

Ever had this happen? After a month of rain, as the rainy season ends and winter begins, a healthy plant suddenly gets yellow leaves, a soft base and white fuzz on the soil, even though you water the same as always. The plant did not get sick overnight. The soil it stands in has changed.

Why you need to refresh the soil at the end of the rainy season

During the rains, potting mix stays wet, settles and compacts, and the air gaps between particles disappear. Roots need oxygen to breathe. In dense, soggy soil, roots weaken and soil-borne pathogens such as Pythium and Phytophthora can cause root rot. When winter arrives, cooler temperatures slow evaporation, so soil stays wet much longer and the problem gets worse.

Signs your pot soil is in trouble

  • Water pools on the surface for more than 1-2 minutes before soaking in
  • Soil forms hard clumps or shrinks away from the pot edge
  • White fuzz or green slime appears on the soil surface and pot rim
  • A musty, rotting smell
  • Lower leaves turn yellow and the plant wobbles because roots are not anchoring

5 steps to improve soil at the end of the rainy season

Step 1: Check the soil with your finger and eyes

Push a finger 2-3 cm into the soil. If it is still cool and damp 3-4 days after watering, drainage is slow. Lift the pot too: if it is unusually heavy, the soil is holding more water than it should.

Step 2: Remove old material and cut bad roots

If the soil is very compacted, take the plant out and gently shake off the old mix. Healthy roots are white or cream, firm and slightly springy. Rotten roots are black, mushy and smelly. Cut them off with scissors wiped with alcohol. Do not feel sorry for them: the earlier you cut, the faster the plant recovers.

Step 3: Mix an airy winter potting blend

My basic recipe for foliage plants in 4-6 inch black plastic pots is 2 parts good potting soil to 1 part drainage material such as perlite, small charcoal pieces or volcanic rock. For succulents and cacti, go half and half.
Plant groupRecommended mixWinter watering frequency
Indoor foliage plants (monstera, pothos)2 soil : 1 drainage materialAbout every 7-10 days, based on soil moisture
Succulents and cacti1 soil : 1 drainage materialAbout every 10-14 days
Outdoor flowering plants2 soil : 1 composted manure : 1 sandWhen the top 2-3 cm is dry
These figures come from hands-on experience and are a guide. Adjust for the light and airflow at your home.

Step 4: Water by the weather, not the calendar

In winter plants grow slowly and use less water. I see many customers keep watering at rainy-season levels and end up with rotten roots. The reliable method is to check with a finger before every watering, and to water in mid-morning so the soil can dry out during the day.

Step 5: Go light on fertilizer, or skip it

A common myth is that a struggling plant needs more fertilizer. In truth, weak roots cannot handle strong fertilizer and may burn. Wait until you see new shoots or new roots, then use a fertilizer diluted to half of the label strength.

Preventing soil fungus in cool, humid weather

  • Always use pots with drainage holes and never leave water standing in the saucer overnight
  • Sprinkle a thin layer of fine gravel or perlite on top so the surface dries quickly
  • Place plants where air moves, near a window with morning light
  • If you see white fuzz, scrape off about 1 cm of topsoil, add fresh mix and let the surface dry before the next watering
  • Wash pots and tools before every repotting
If you have dogs or cats, take a little care: when using manure or antifungal products, keep pots on a high shelf out of reach until the soil is completely dry.

Just brought a plant home? You can start right away

If your new plant is still in its black plastic nursery pot, there is no need to repot immediately. Let it adjust to the new spot for 1-2 weeks, then check the roots and soil. If the original mix is dense or soggy, repot following the steps above, ideally on a day when the air is not too humid.

At Pama The Gardener we have grown, propagated and packed plants ourselves for over 10 years, and we have seen first-hand that good soil is half the battle. If you want plants with strong roots, ready to start in an airy mix, come adopt one and take it home to heal your heart 🪴

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

When should I change plant soil before winter?

Late October to November, at the end of the rainy season, is a good window. The air is not yet cold and roots can still recover. If the soil is still loose and the plant is healthy, you do not need to replace everything; just top up and add drainage material.

Is white fuzz on the soil dangerous fungus?

Usually not immediately, but it signals the soil is too damp. The white fuzz is often a mold feeding on organic matter. Scrape off the surface, move the plant somewhere with airflow, and let the soil dry 2-3 cm deep. If the base of the stem is soft, check the roots right away.

How much less should I water in winter?

Cutting back by one third to one half compared with the rainy season is a safe starting point, but the real indicator is soil moisture. Push a finger 2-3 cm deep and wait if it is still cool and damp. Plants in air-conditioned rooms dry slower than those near windy windows.

Can I fertilize in winter?

Yes, but lightly. Plants grow slowly in cool air, so use fertilizer diluted to half of the label strength once a month for plants still producing new leaves. Skip it for plants that have stopped growing or whose roots have not recovered.
