Preparing Soil for Winter: 5 Steps to Improve Your Potting Mix After the Rainy Season for Strong Roots and No Fungus (2026 Update)

Preparing soil for winter means turning the compacted, waterlogged potting mix left over from the rainy season into something airy, fast-draining and clean before the cool weather arrives. The short answer: scrape off the old topsoil, mix in airy materials like perlite or pine bark, water less, and skip high-nitrogen fertilizer. Roots will move well and fungus will have no place to settle.

Ever had this happen? After a whole rainy season, the plant on your work desk or condo window starts looking dull, the soil has a white crust on top, or there is a faint musty smell. That is the plant telling you its roots feel suffocated. I have grown and packed plants for customers for more than 10 years, and I see this every late rainy season. This article walks you through it step by step, in plain language you can actually follow.

Why Late Rainy Season Is the Time to Improve Your Soil

During continuous rain, humidity is high and light is low, so potting soil dries much more slowly than usual. Organic materials such as peat moss or bark slowly break down and settle, and the air spaces between particles shrink. Roots need oxygen to breathe. Once the soil compacts, roots lack air, and that is exactly when fungi like Pythium and Phytophthora, the main causes of root rot, thrive.

Signs Your Potting Mix Is Struggling

  • Water pools on the surface for more than 1-2 minutes before soaking in
  • Soil dries much slower than before; a finger pushed 2-3 cm deep still feels moist after 5-7 days
  • White crust or fuzzy mold on the surface, or a musty smell
  • Leaves yellowing from the bottom up even though you do not water often
  • Fungus gnats hovering around the pot

5 Steps to Prepare Soil for Winter

Step 1: Always Check the Roots First

Gently slide the plant out of its pot. Healthy roots in most foliage plants are white to cream, firm and springy. If you find brown-black, mushy roots with a sour smell, cut them off with scissors wiped with 70% alcohol. Root trimming must go together with changing the soil, otherwise the pathogens stay.

Step 2: Decide Between a Full Soil Change and a Partial Refresh

Soil ConditionWhat to Do
Soil still loose and drying normally, only the surface is packedScrape off 2-3 cm of topsoil and add fresh mix blended with perlite
Soil sunken, dense, waterlogged, used for over 1 yearReplace all the soil in the pot
Root rot or heavy mold foundReplace all soil, wash the pot with soapy water and dry it in the sun

Step 3: Mix a More Airy Soil Recipe

For typical foliage plants kept in condos, a recipe I use often is 50% good-quality potting soil + 25% perlite or pumice + 25% pine bark or chopped coconut coir. For succulents and cacti, raise the airy materials to 60-70%. One caution: do not mix in much garden soil or fine sand, because it compacts faster than before.

Step 4: Handle Fungus the Right Way

  • Wash old pots thoroughly and soak them in water with diluted bleach, about 1 part bleach to 9 parts water, for 10 minutes, then rinse until the smell is gone
  • Let pots and new potting material sit in gentle sun for a while before use
  • For extra protection, mix Trichoderma biological product into the soil at the rate on the label
  • If thin white mold appears on the surface, scoop it out and improve airflow
A common myth is pouring strong fungicide on the soil every week. That is not good, because it also kills beneficial microbes and can burn young roots. Use it only when necessary and exactly as labeled.

Step 5: Adjust Watering and Fertilizer for Cooler Air

In winter, transpiration drops and soil dries more slowly, so the plant naturally grows slower. Stretch your watering interval to roughly 1.5-2 times the summer interval, and use a finger pushed about 2-3 cm deep as the judge. If it is still cool and moist, do not water yet. Reduce fertilizer frequency and avoid high-nitrogen formulas, which push tender new shoots that are fragile in the cold. If you feed, use half the strength on the label.

Adjust Soil for Each Plant Group

  • Tropical foliage plants such as Monstera deliciosa and pothos (Epipremnum aureum): like airy, evenly moist soil; add pine bark so roots can breathe
  • Succulents and cacti: need fast-draining mineral material; water very little in winter
  • Plants in air-conditioned rooms: soil dries slower than you think, so watch out for re-watering just because leaves look limp
For homes with dogs or cats, take a little care: if you use Trichoderma or granular fertilizer on the surface, cover it fully with soil and keep the pot on a shelf out of reach.

Common Mistakes When Changing Soil

  • Moving to a pot that is too large; extra soil holds water and dries slowly. Go up only 1-2 inches
  • Pots without drainage holes, the main cause of root rot
  • Soaking the plant heavily right after repotting; water just enough and let it adjust
  • Putting it in strong sun immediately; keep it in bright indirect light for 5-7 days first

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

When is the best time to change soil in late rainy season?

The best time is when the rain eases and the weather is not yet cold, around late October to November in Thailand, because roots recover quickly. If you find root rot, do it immediately without waiting. Avoid days of extreme heat or cold.

Do I need to replace all the soil if there is white mold on top?

Not always. If it is a thin white mold only on the surface and the roots look fine, remove 2-3 cm of topsoil and add fresh mix, then improve airflow. If the mold returns or there is a bad smell, replace all the soil in the pot.

How much perlite can I mix into the soil?

For general foliage plants, mix in about 20-30% perlite by volume. For succulents you can go up to 50% or more depending on the species. The goal is for water to pass through quickly while the soil still holds enough moisture.

How often should I water condo plants in winter?

There is no fixed number, but generally stretch the interval to about 1.5-2 times the summer interval, and check by pushing a finger 2-3 cm into the soil before each watering. If the soil is still cool and moist, do not water yet.
