Celebrate World Environment Day: Transform Your Backyard into a Zero-Waste System with Sustainable Bio-Fermented Water

11 Jul 2026 3 ครั้ง อ่าน 17 นาที

Have you ever wanted to care for your beloved plants perfectly, but worried about generating waste or chemical residues in the environment? This World Environment Day, PAMA The Gardener invites you to embrace a more sustainable approach to gardening by making your own 'bio-fermented water' easily at home. This method not only helps reduce organic waste but also nourishes your plants, making them robust and truly eco-friendly.

Making bio-fermented water is a key to creating a Zero Waste garden because it transforms leftover food scraps or plant matter into valuable liquid fertilizer. This significantly reduces the amount of waste that needs to be discarded and provides essential nutrients to plants, helping them grow well, build disease resistance, and greatly reduce reliance on chemical substances.

Why should we make bio-fermented water for our backyard garden?

As a botanist with over 10 years of experience with plants, I can confidently say that bio-fermented water is a 'hero' that many might overlook. Frequent use of chemical fertilizers can degrade soil in the long run and negatively impact beneficial microorganisms. However, with bio-fermented water, we are simultaneously bringing life back to the soil and plants, while also easing the burden on the planet through sustainable organic waste management.

Benefits for Plants and the Environment

  • Nourishes soil and plants: Bio-fermented water is rich in beneficial microorganisms that help improve soil structure, increase nutrient content, and make the soil looser. This allows your plants to absorb nutrients more effectively.
  • Reduces chemical use: When soil and plants are naturally strong, there's less need for chemical pesticides or fertilizers. This is true sustainability.
  • Reduces organic waste: Transform kitchen scraps—whether fruit peels (chopped finely), wilted vegetables, or coffee grounds—into excellent liquid fertilizer, instead of sending them to landfills.
  • Boosts immunity: Microorganisms in the fermented water create a natural protective barrier, making plants stronger and more resistant to diseases and pests. It's like a natural immune booster for your plants!

Get Ready: Essential Materials and Equipment

Making bio-fermented water is not as complicated as you might think. We can use easily found materials from our household or garden. The key is to ensure the cleanliness of your containers to prevent unwanted pathogens.
  • Container with a lid: A plastic bucket or plastic water bottle (10-20 liters) with a tightly fitting lid (but able to be slightly ajar to release gas).
  • Organic materials: Fruit peels (chopped finely), fresh vegetables, coffee grounds, food scraps without meat or fat.
  • Molasses: Available at agricultural stores. It serves as food for microorganisms.
  • Clean water: Tap water left to sit for 1-2 days, or rainwater.
  • Microorganism starter (optional): EM (Effective Microorganisms) can speed up the reaction. If not available, natural microorganisms will work on their own.

Botanist's Secret Recipe: Make Bio-Fermented Water Easily Yourself

Here is a basic recipe I regularly use with excellent results. The recommended proportions will help microorganisms work at their maximum efficiency:

Golden Ratio: 3 parts organic material : 1 part molasses : 10 parts clean water

  1. Prepare organic materials: Cut or chop vegetable and fruit scraps into small pieces, about 1-2 centimeters, to increase the surface area for microorganisms to work effectively.
  2. Mix ingredients: Place organic materials into the container, followed by molasses and clean water. Stir well. If using an EM starter, add it at this step, approximately 100 milliliters per 10 liters of fermented water.
  3. Seal and ferment: Close the container tightly (but not completely locked) so that gases produced during fermentation can escape. You should open the lid and stir every 3-5 days during the first 2 weeks to prevent mold and ensure even fermentation.
  4. Fermentation period: The fermentation process takes approximately 1 to 3 months, depending on the type of materials used. The longer it ferments, the more concentrated and effective it becomes. You'll notice the fermented water turning dark brown with a pleasant sour smell, similar to vinegar.
  5. Filter and store: Once complete, filter out only the liquid and store it in tightly sealed bottles. It can be stored in a cool, shaded place for several months. The remaining solid residue can be used as a base fertilizer in planting holes or mixed into potting soil.

Tips for Maximum Effectiveness

  • Watering plants: For general watering of your plants, mix bio-fermented water with clean water at a ratio of 1:500 (e.g., 10 milliliters of fermented water to 5 liters of water). Then, water the base of the plant once a week. You can also spray it on leaves. It's best to spray in the early morning or evening when the sun is not intense to prevent leaf burn.
  • Soil conditioning before planting: For new potting soil or preparing soil in pots for our potted plants, you can mix fermented water at a ratio of 1:200 into the soil about 1 week before planting to introduce microorganisms and condition the soil.
  • Caution: Never use concentrated bio-fermented water directly on plants, as it can damage the roots. Always observe your plants after use. If you notice any unusual symptoms, reduce the frequency or concentration.

Making your own bio-fermented water is more than just making fertilizer. It's about building a connection with nature and helping us understand the life cycle of our beloved plants and the environment better. Give it a try; you'll see impressive results for both your plants and our planet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bio-fermented water be used for all types of plants?

Yes, bio-fermented water can be used for almost all types of plants, including flowers, ornamentals, fruit trees, or vegetable garden plants, as it naturally adds microorganisms and nutrients to the soil.

If I don't have molasses, what can I use instead?

If molasses is unavailable, you can use brown sugar or palm sugar instead. Use the same ratio as molasses to provide a food source for microorganisms to grow and decompose effectively.

Does bio-fermented water smell bad?

Properly made bio-fermented water should have a pleasant sour smell, similar to vinegar or alcohol. If it smells putrid, it indicates a problem with the fermentation, such as too much air entering or the presence of decaying food scraps that should not have been included.

Does bio-fermented water expire?

Filtered bio-fermented water stored in a tightly sealed container in a shaded place can last for years. Its effectiveness might slightly decrease over time, but it will still be beneficial.
