Root Rot: What Causes It? PAMA's Guide to Saving Your Plants

23 Aug 2026 10 ครั้ง อ่าน 17 นาที

Have you ever woken up to find your beloved plant's leaves turning yellow and wilting, despite watering it well? Your heart sinks, fearing it's about to leave you. This, my friends, is a crucial warning sign of 'root rot,' a classic problem most plant lovers encounter, and often the main culprit behind plants saying goodbye.

Today, PAMA wants to help you understand root rot better. It's a simple problem that happens when your plant's roots don't get enough oxygen, usually from too much water or a dense potting mix. When the roots are weak, fungi and bacteria attack, causing them to rot and making it impossible for them to absorb water and nutrients. That's why your plant looks sick. We'll show you how to give your plant first aid and how to care for them so they don't get it again.

What Exactly is Root Rot, Anyway?

Many people think root rot is just about overwatering, right? But it's not really about 'water' directly. It's actually because there's 'not enough oxygen' in the potting mix. Imagine this: when the soil gets soggy, water fills up all the air pockets that the roots need to breathe. When they can't breathe, they get weak.

When roots can't breathe, they weaken, making it easier for fungi and bacteria (which are naturally present in the soil) to attack them. The roots then start to become mushy, so they can't absorb water and nutrients to feed the stem and leaves like they should.

This problem often occurs with potted plants that lack good drainage holes or have a potting mix that is too dense.

Warning Signs of 'Root Rot' to Watch Out For

If your plant starts showing these symptoms, check immediately if root rot is on its way:
  • Yellowing, wilting leaves despite watering: This is the most common symptom. Since rotten roots cannot absorb water, it's like a sick person who drinks water but can't use it.
  • Soft, mushy leaves and stem: Try touching the leaves; if they are soft like old vegetables, or the stem feels mushy and collapses easily when pressed, these are dangerous signs.
  • Stunted growth: Plants usually grow continuously, but if yours suddenly stops growing with no new leaves, there might be an issue at the root.
  • Foul smell from the soil: Take a sniff near the soil. If you detect a musty, rotten egg-like smell, it's a clear sign that the roots are decaying.
  • Constantly soggy soil: Even after skipping watering for several days, if the soil is still wet, it indicates poor drainage.
On average, most plants prefer the soil to dry out completely about 1-2 inches deep before the next watering, though it depends on the plant, of course.

First Aid for Root Rot: Bringing Your Plant Back to Life

Don't panic! If you spot these symptoms, we still have a chance to save our beloved plant.

1. Dig it up, inspect, and clean the roots.

Gently remove the plant from its pot. Tap off all old soil. Then, rinse the roots under clean water to remove as much soil as possible.

Inspect the roots. Healthy roots should be white or light-colored and odorless. Rotten roots will be dark brown/black, mushy, soft, and have a foul smell.

2. Trim away rotten roots.

Using sharp, clean, and sterilized scissors or a knife, cut off all decayed roots. Also remove any stem parts that have become soft and mushy. Leaving rotten roots will allow the infection to spread.

Make sure to sterilize your tools with 70% alcohol before and after each use. This is super important to prevent spreading diseases!

3. Soak roots in fungicide (if necessary).

For severely affected plants or those frequently suffering from root rot, you might mix a mild fungicide solution and soak the roots for about 15-20 minutes. Then rinse with plain water.

However, for initial symptoms, trimming roots and repotting with fresh potting mix is often sufficient.

4. Repot with fresh potting mix and a suitable pot.

Choose a potting mix with ingredients that drain really well, like coco coir, perlite, volcanic rock, or mixed leaf mold compost, to prevent waterlogging.

The new pot should have large and multiple drainage holes. Sometimes, you might even need to select a smaller pot if the plant has lost many roots, allowing the remaining roots to recover.

For medium-sized plants (6-8 inch pots), we recommend using a potting mix blended with perlite or coco coir at a 2:1 ratio to enhance drainage.

5. Recuperate and care for it correctly.

After repotting, place the plant in a shaded area with good air circulation. Do not water immediately; wait about 2-3 days for the root wounds to dry and begin healing.

When watering, only water when the potting mix is completely dry. Try poking your finger 2 inches deep; if it's still moist, don't water yet.

Prevention is Better Than Cure: Tips to Keep Your Plants Free from Root Rot

It's always better to prevent root rot so our beloved plants don't have to go through such tough times.
  • Always check soil moisture before watering: Don't water on a schedule. Water only when the soil is dry, as moisture levels vary daily.
  • Choose a well-draining, airy potting mix: This is key! Select soil mixed with drainage-enhancing materials like coco coir, perlite, or volcanic rock.
  • Use pots with plenty of drainage holes: We emphasize again that drainage holes are paramount. Whether placed in an air-conditioned room or by a window, the pot must always have good drainage.
  • Sufficient light: Plants receiving adequate sunlight can photosynthesize effectively, allowing them to use water faster and reducing the chance of soggy soil.
  • Good air circulation: Circulating air helps the soil dry faster. This is especially important for plants in condos or air-conditioned rooms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can root rot spread to other plants?

Root rot itself doesn't directly spread, but the fungi and bacteria causing it can contaminate soil or planting tools. If these are used with other plants without proper cleaning, it can lead to infection. So, be careful, and always sterilize your equipment!

How long does it takes for a plant to recover from root rot?

Recovery time really depends on how severe the condition is and how well you care for your plant after first aid. Some plants may show new growth within 2-4 weeks, while others with severe damage might take longer. The most important thing is to be patient and care for them consistently.

What type of potting mix best prevents root rot?

You'll want an airy, really well-draining potting mix. We recommend mixing coco coir, perlite, or volcanic rock in appropriate ratios with general potting soil. This ensures roots receive enough oxygen and prevents water from pooling in the pot.
